A sewage treatment plant only earns its capital cost if the treated effluent still meets its discharge standard in year ten, not just at commissioning. What Is a Sewage Treatment Plant?
A sewage treatment plant removes solids, organic matter and pathogens from domestic wastewater so the treated output can be discharged safely or reused. Sewage arrives from toilets, kitchens, showers and laundry across a building or development. It leaves as treated sewage effluent, known across the UAE as TSE, suitable for irrigation, district cooling, dust suppression or toilet flushing.
That last part matters more here than almost anywhere else. Dubai reuses more than 90% of its treated effluent for landscape irrigation, parks, aquifer recharge and district cooling. The UAE National Water Security Strategy 2036 targets 95% reuse of treated water, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai have each set targets for full wastewater reuse. A plant that only treats to discharge grade solves half the problem. A plant that treats to reuse grade turns a waste stream into a water supply for the site it sits on.
Where the intended reuse demands a higher grade than the STP alone produces, a TSE polishing plant is added downstream to lift the effluent to the required standard.
STP vs ETP vs Greywater Treatment
A sewage treatment plant handles domestic sewage. Industrial process effluent carries a different contaminant profile and is treated in an effluent treatment plant. Sites recovering only the lighter streams from showers, basins and laundry use a greywater treatment plant instead. Many developments run two of the three in parallel.
How a Sewage Treatment Plant Works?
Sewage passes through four stages, each removing a different class of contaminant. Skipping or undersizing any one of them shows up later as odour complaints, blocked equipment or failed effluent tests.
Preliminary Treatment
Coarse and fine screens plus grit chambers remove rags, plastics, sand and grit. This stage protects every pump, blower and membrane downstream, and it is the stage most often undersized in the plants GWT is later asked to retrofit.
Primary Treatment
Settlement removes heavy solids and floating grease. Solids drop out as primary sludge and move to the sludge handling line, while the clarified flow continues on.
Secondary Treatment
Micro-organisms break down dissolved and suspended organic matter. This is where BOD and COD are removed, and it is the stage that determines which technology a plant uses.
Tertiary Treatment
Filtration and disinfection by chlorine or UV remove residual solids and pathogens, bringing faecal coliform down to the level the intended reuse application requires.
Sludge Handling
Sludge produced through the process is thickened and dewatered on site, then removed. GWT specifies the dewatering method against sludge volume and available space rather than fitting the same equipment to every plant.

MBBR Sewage Treatment Plant

MBR Sewage Treatment Plant
Membrane bioreactor systems combine biological treatment with membrane filtration in a single stage. Produces the highest effluent quality in the smallest footprint, at the cost of membrane cleaning and periodic replacement. Specified where treated effluent is reused on site or where space is severely constrained.
SBR Sewage Treatment Plant
Sequencing batch reactor systems run fill, react, settle and decant cycles in a single tank, removing the need for a separate clarifier. Handles widely fluctuating daily flow well, provided the automation and controls are reliable.
Extended Aeration Sewage Treatment Plant
Long sludge age produces the least sludge of any option and is the simplest to operate. Requires the largest footprint. Specified for labour accommodations and remote sites with space available and limited operator cover.
SAFF Sewage Treatment Plant

No single technology wins on every column. A hotel with a 400-room occupancy swing and no space for a clarifier is a different problem from a labour accommodation with steady flow and a spare plot. STP Discharge and Reuse Standards in the UAE
Treated effluent is assessed on BOD, COD, TSS, pH and faecal coliform, with limits set by the authority for the emirate the plant operates in. Dubai Municipality, Sharjah Municipality and the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi each publish their own, and the threshold tightens as reuse moves from restricted irrigation toward unrestricted or human-contact applications.
