Gulf Water Treatment (GWT) designs, supplies, installs and maintains industrial effluent treatment plants across the UAE and GCC, with over 2,000 water and wastewater treatment units installed since 1992. The team that commissions each ETP supports it through operation and maintenance.
Two sites can produce the same volume of effluent and need different plants, because a concrete batching plant and a tobacco line share almost no contaminants. GWT builds each treatment train around the contaminant profile of the process that feeds it.

What Is an Effluent Treatment Plant?
An effluent treatment plant (ETP) is a plant that treats industrial process wastewater to the standard needed for discharge or reuse. It removes chemicals, suspended solids, oils, heavy metals and organic load that domestic sewage does not carry.
Effluent is the wastewater that leaves an industrial process, and its make-up changes by sector. That is why every ETP is designed around a specific process rather than a standard template.
Industrial effluent is assessed on BOD, COD, TSS, pH, oil and grease and heavy metals, plus sulphates and fluorides for some processes. Where a site needs no liquid discharge at all, the ETP is paired with a zero liquid discharge system.
ETP Solutions by Industry
Each industry produces its own effluent, so the treatment train starts from the stream, not the plant size. The table shows the streams GWT treats most often and the stages each one needs.
| Industry | Typical effluent | Treatment train |
|---|---|---|
| Oil and gas | Oily wastewater, produced water, high TDS | Oil separation, DAF, biological treatment |
| Petrochemical and refining | Hydrocarbons, high COD, toxic organics | DAF, biological treatment, AOP polishing |
| Construction and EPC | Concrete washout, high pH, suspended solids | Neutralisation, settlement, containerised plant |
| Power and utilities | Cooling tower blowdown, high salinity | Chemical treatment, high saline treatment, ZLD |
| Metal finishing and manufacturing | Heavy metals, fluorides, sulphates | Precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption |
For oil and gas and petrochemical sites, GWT pairs the ETP with produced water treatment where extraction water must be handled too. Construction and EPC projects usually take containerised plants that move with the site.
Power plants treat cooling tower blowdown and high-salinity streams through high saline water treatment systems. Manufacturing sites with heavy metals or fluorides use the specialist stages below.
How Does an Effluent Treatment Plant Work?
An effluent treatment plant works in four treatment stages plus sludge handling. The stages are the same across industries, but which ones are emphasised and what is dosed at each one changes with the effluent.
- Pre-treatment. Screening, equalisation and oil and grease removal. Equalisation matters more in an ETP than an STP, because industrial flow often arrives in batches.
- Primary treatment. Coagulation and flocculation, followed by settlement or dissolved air flotation (DAF). DAF is specified where the effluent carries oils, grease or low-density solids.
- Secondary treatment. Biological breakdown of organic load, selected on how biodegradable the effluent is, not only on its volume.
- Tertiary treatment. Filtration, advanced oxidation, ion exchange or reverse osmosis bring the output to discharge or reuse grade.
- Sludge handling. Thickening and dewatering, with industrial sludge handled according to what it carries.
Biological Treatment Options for ETPs
MBBR suits effluent with changing loads, while MBR suits sites that reuse treated water in a small footprint. The table compares the biological options GWT supplies.
| Technology | How it works | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| MBBR | Bacteria grow on floating plastic carriers | Changing loads, compact sites |
| MBR | Biological treatment plus membrane filtration | On-site reuse, tight plots |
| SBR | Fill, react, settle and decant in one tank | Batch flow, varying volumes |
Specialist ETP Stages for Difficult Effluents
Some industrial effluents carry contaminants that a biological plant will not remove. GWT designs targeted stages for these streams.
- Sulphates removal. Chemical precipitation and membrane stages for mineral processing and chemical manufacture
- Fluorides removal. Precipitation and adsorption stages for glass, aluminium and chemical operations
- Heavy metals removal. Precipitation, ion exchange and selective adsorption for metal finishing and plating lines
- High salinity effluent. Recovery from streams that standard membranes cannot handle
- Produced water. Hydrocarbon and dissolved solids removal for oil and gas operations
GWT Effluent Treatment Plant Products
GWT supplies effluent treatment plants in four build formats, with capacity sized to each site. The right format depends on how permanent the installation is and whether the plant must fit inside a process building.
Containerised Effluent Treatment Plant
A complete plant inside a shipping container, factory assembled and tested before delivery. It suits construction sites, temporary operations and remote industrial locations, with short-term needs covered through rental systems.
Packaged Effluent Treatment Plant
Factory-built modular units delivered ready to connect. A packaged effluent treatment plant allows larger capacities than a container with less site construction than a civil build.
Skid-Mounted Effluent Treatment Plant
Pre-assembled on a steel frame for installation inside an existing plant building. It suits sites where the ETP must fit a process facility rather than a separate plot.
Civil-Built Effluent Treatment Plant
Reinforced concrete construction for large permanent industrial installations. It is usually delivered under turnkey project execution or on a build, operate and transfer basis.
How an ETP Project Works
An ETP project with GWT moves through six steps, starting with the effluent itself.
- Effluent characterisation. Our engineers sample the stream and measure flow, load and the contaminants the plant must remove.
- Treatment train design. We select the stages, technology and build format that fit your effluent and discharge limits.
- Design and fabrication. We complete the design, then fabricate and test packaged units before delivery.
- Installation. Units are set on prepared foundations and connected to the process, power and discharge lines.
- Commissioning and testing. The plant is brought up to load and its effluent is tested against the agreed limits.
- Operation or handover. GWT operates the plant, services it under an AMC or hands it to your operators.

ETP Discharge and Reuse Standards in the UAE and GCC
Industrial discharge limits are set by the authority where the plant operates, and they tighten as reuse moves toward unrestricted uses. In the UAE that is the emirate’s authority, such as Dubai Municipality or the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy.
In Saudi Arabia, discharge rules sit with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and in Oman with the Environment Authority. GWT confirms the applicable limits during effluent characterisation, before design begins.
GWT Effluent Treatment Plant Services
An ETP that meets its limits at commissioning can drift out of compliance without regular maintenance. Dosing rates change as the process changes, media fouls and effluent composition rarely stays as it was at design stage.
- Operation and maintenance. Daily operation, chemical dosing, sludge handling, calibration and effluent reporting against the applicable limits.
- ETP annual maintenance contract. Scheduled servicing for sites running their own operators.
- Third-party servicing. GWT services ETPs installed by other suppliers, starting with an independent condition assessment.
- ETP retrofits. Upgrades where limits have tightened, production has grown, energy use has risen or a process change has altered the effluent.
- ETP chemicals. Coagulants, flocculants, pH correction and disinfection chemicals matched to the effluent.
- Spare parts and repair and refurbishment for GWT and third-party plants through the aftermarket service.
- Consultancy and feasibility. Effluent characterisation and a treatment recommendation before capital commitment.

Effluent Treatment Plant FAQs
Answers to common questions about effluent treatment plants in the UAE and GCC.
Need an ETP designed around your effluent?
ETP stands for effluent treatment plant. It treats industrial process wastewater to the standard needed for discharge or reuse.
An ETP treats industrial process wastewater with a contaminant profile specific to the industry. A sewage treatment plant treats domestic sewage from toilets, kitchens, showers and laundry.
Wastewater is any used water, including domestic sewage. Effluent usually means the wastewater that leaves an industrial process or a treatment stage.
An ETP runs pre-treatment, primary treatment, secondary biological treatment and tertiary polishing, with sludge handled throughout. Which stages are emphasised depends on the effluent.
Coagulants and flocculants remove suspended particles, acids and alkalis correct pH and disinfectants control microbial load. GWT sets the chemicals and dosing rates after characterising the effluent.
ETPs are supplied as containerised, packaged, skid-mounted or civil-built plants. The format depends on capacity, how permanent the installation is and whether it must fit inside a process building.
Cost depends on flow, the contaminants in the stream, the discharge or reuse standard and the build format. GWT quotes after a site and load assessment.
