Pioneer Oil & Gas  2 x 800 CMD STP, MBBR

The Challenge

Pioneer Oil & Gas required a reliable wastewater treatment solution to manage the demanding conditions of its operations in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The facility needed to treat large volumes of wastewater consistently, meeting strict regulatory discharge standards while minimizing downtime. Given the operational intensity of the oil and gas sector, the system had to be resilient, efficient, and capable of adapting to variable hydraulic and organic loads.

GWT Solution

To meet the client’s requirement of treating 3,000 m³/day of sewage, Gulf Water Treatment designed and delivered a comprehensive system built around reliability, efficiency, and compliance. The solution began with a robust screening and pre-treatment stage, ensuring that solids and debris were effectively removed before entering the main treatment line. This not only prevented clogging but also protected critical downstream equipment, extending the operational life of the entire facility.

The heart of the plant lies in its advanced biological treatment process, engineered to reduce organic load and consistently deliver effluent that meets the region’s strict environmental and reuse standards. By combining proven biological systems with optimized process control, the plant ensures steady performance even under fluctuating loads.

To further polish the treated water, a multimedia filtration system was integrated, providing a final barrier that guarantees high-quality effluent suitable for reuse in landscaping and other non-potable applications. This step added an extra layer of confidence for the client, reinforcing long-term sustainability goals.

Supporting the treatment processes, a five-kilometer piping network made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was installed for sewage collection and treated water distribution. HDPE was selected for its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, ensuring the infrastructure can withstand the demands of continuous operation in challenging conditions.

Finally, the entire system was equipped with automation and real-time monitoring features. This allows operators to continuously track plant performance, optimize treatment efficiency, and respond quickly to any variations. The combination of advanced process design, durable infrastructure, and intelligent monitoring created a solution that not only addressed the immediate challenge but also positioned the client for long-term operational stability.

To achieve the ultrapure quality required for sour gas treatment, the RO system was paired with advanced electrodeionization (EDI) technology. Unlike conventional mixed-bed demineralizers, the EDI process eliminates the need for chemical regeneration, providing continuous production of water with conductivity below 0.2 µS/cm. This innovation not only enhanced operational reliability but also aligned with the client’s sustainability goals by reducing chemical handling and waste.

The entire system was delivered in a containerized, modular format, pre-assembled within two high-cube containers. This approach minimized the need for extensive on-site civil works, shortened the construction timeline, and allowed for rapid deployment in a remote oilfield setting. Each container was internally equipped with marine-grade coatings, waterproof flooring, and environmental controls to ensure the equipment’s long-term durability under extreme conditions.

By combining proven water treatment technologies with modular execution, GWT provided the client with a future-ready asset that integrates seamlessly into existing operations while offering flexibility for expansion or adaptation in the years ahead.
