King Salman Park  TSE Water Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant. 10x5000 CMD

The Challenge

King Salman Park, one of the world’s largest urban parks, required a sustainable and reliable source of high-quality water to support landscaping, irrigation, and recreational facilities. The challenge was to convert treated sewage effluent (TSE) with high salinity (TDS up to 2,000 mg/L) into safe, reusable water at a scale that could serve the vast needs of the park. The project needed a solution that was not only technically robust but also modular, fast to deploy, and capable of operating efficiently in demanding environmental conditions.

GWT Solution

Gulf Water Treatment Co. partnered with Wetico to design, supply, and deliver a 10 × 5,000 CMD (cubic meters per day) modular desalination facility based on advanced reverse osmosis (RO) technology. The solution was built around a containerized, plug-and-play concept, ensuring that each treatment train could be preassembled, tested, and transported for quick installation on site. This minimized construction time and risks while enabling scalability.

Key Treatment Processes:

  1. Advanced Pre-Treatment:
Ultra-filtration (UF) modules and self-cleaning filters remove suspended solids and microorganisms, ensuring RO membranes are protected for long-term performance. A carefully designed chemical dosing regime—including dechlorination, coagulation, anti-scalant, and controlled pre-chlorination—further improves water quality.
  2. Reverse Osmosis (RO):
Each RO module uses a two-stage configuration to maximize efficiency, powered by high-pressure vertical pumps. The modular RO trains are housed in 40-foot containers, complete with marine-grade coatings, waterproof flooring, and air-conditioning systems to withstand harsh local environments.
  3. Smart Operation:
Automated backwash, chemical-enhanced cleaning cycles, and an optimized recovery rate of 65% ensure operational stability while reducing maintenance and downtime

The final product water consistently achieves <500 µS/cm conductivity, meeting the stringent requirements for irrigation and park sustainability.

Scope of Work

The scope of work for this project included:

  • Comprehensive design, engineering, and supply of 10 × 5,000 CMD modular RO units.
  • Integration of pre-treatment, UF, chemical dosing, and high-pressure pumping systems.
  • Delivery and on-site deployment using containerized, fully pre-assembled treatment trains.
  • Testing, commissioning, and handover to the client within an accelerated timeframe of six months.

This scope combined both engineering expertise and project execution efficiency, ensuring that the plant was delivered on time and aligned with the client’s long-term sustainability goals.

Our Approach

Our approach was built on a balance of innovation, practicality, and speed. By leveraging modular engineering and preassembly, we minimized project risks and reduced site activities. Close coordination with consultants and the end user ensured that all performance standards were met while keeping sustainability at the core of the design. The project demonstrates Gulf Water Treatment’s ability to deliver large-scale, environmentally responsible water solutions that combine cutting-edge technology with dependable execution.

Key Benefits

  • Rapid Deployment: Modular containerized units reduced site installation time and accelerated commissioning.
  • High Reliability: Robust design and automated cleaning systems ensure continuous operation with minimal intervention.
  • Sustainability: By reusing TSE, the plant reduces dependency on freshwater resources, supporting Saudi Arabia’s vision for greener cities.
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimized recovery rates lower operating costs and improve water use efficiency.
